What if when I was young I...

Updated: Oct 26, 2021

If you are anything like me, growing up your mom had you in church every time the doors opened. I mean E-V-E-R-Y- church service, sunday school, Bible vacation school, musical, revival, recital, choir practice, Easter program and practice, Christmas pageants, practices and shows…let’s see what else Thanksgiving Dinner, oh wait…that wasn’t so bad…lol. No but we practically lived in the church and the messed up thing about it is that I didn’t acknowledge these events as anything more than a social gathering. I even got baptized as a child and had no idea what it signified…I was frightened to be quite honest. With the slow playing organ and everyone in white gowns, hovering over me, to dunk me in a tub of water, in front of the whole congregation…what the what?!? Po’ child!

Now fast forward to now…I wish I would have paid attention to every word that was given about Jesus Christ. I wish I could have met Him when I was young. If I would have, I would have avoided a lot of immature mischief, misguidance, evil and turmoil that I went through as a child and a young adult. If I had only known Jesus’ sacrificing love for me and took Him up on His offer of love, peace, rest and abundance at an early age. If I had only known how to recognize the enemy’s tactics to trip me up and to entice me to do wrong. Only if I knew that the feeling that I had to go in the other direction, was God’s voice guiding me. What if I would have cried out to Jesus, instead of people? What if I would have held Him to His promise that I was never alone…that He would never leave me or forsake me? What if I lived believing that He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that I could ever ask for or imagine, according to His Spirit within me? What if when they called me ugly, I remembered that my creator and Father said that I was beautifully and wonderfully made? What if when they said I would be nothing more than a lady on the street with a lot of kids, I would have known that God says He knows His thoughts of me…to prosper me.

I often times think about the “what if’s”, but that time is past for me and I am fully aware of the ways and promises of God as I walk this journey, following Jesus. But that time is not past for our youth today. That time is Right Now! They still have a chance…the chance for a love filled, Spirit guided, abundant life with the promise of salvation and eternal life with our Father.
